I'm looking for a moderately priced lens I can use for portraits and for occasional indoor sports like basketball.
I have 2 Sigma lenses today - the 17-70 f2.8-4.5 that I use as my walkaround lens and a 70-300 F4-5.6 DG APO. Want something that gives me better depth of field in portraits (outdoor as well as indoor shots with flash & diffuser) and could also do a better job capturing the occasional basketball or volleyball game. From reading the forums, it would seem that the Canon 85 mm 1.8 prime would handle both of these admirably. Do you agree? Anything else I might consider? Thanks, in advance, for your help (and happy holidays) --Barry |

Thanks, all.
I ordered the 50 f1.8 and 85 f1.8 today. For about $400 (including the UV filters), it should help address both of my needs. Thanks again and have a happy holiday. |

For indoor group shots try the Canon 35mm f/2 lens, it's reasonably priced and has great image quality.
