I want to purchase a new lensfor my digital rebel. Right now I have it narrowed down to either the Canon 100-400 mm or the Sigma 50-500 mm lens. This lens would be used for wild life shoots. I already have a Canon 75-300 mm lens. I'm looking for any information you could give me on these lenses. I have read good and bad about each. Thanks.

If 400mm is long enough for you, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens is a better lens from an optical quality perspective, based on tests at popular sites that rate lenses. It would also give you the advantage of IS.

Of course, it's also more expensive. ;-)

I'll move thisthread down to our Canon Lenses Forum, where you may have a better chance of getting responses from Canon users on the pros and cons of both.

The short answer is obvious - Canon if you can afford it !

I have the 100/400L and it is a very, very fine lens. You can pull in just about anything you are shooting. It does have a 'sweet' range of 325-365mm.

I have many full frame shots of Tiger cubs from 200-250 feet.

I also can walk around for a couple of hours with no unusual fatigue.

The IS feature speaks for itself.

Remember that the 400mm actually gives you 640mm with the magnification factor.
