He needs to clean his CMOS.

Yes, clean the CMOS, AND use exposure compensation. He let the large shadow area at the bottom of the first picture dominate too much of the metering so that most of the picture (the interesting part) is overexposed.

However, when all is said and done, the 10-22 lens is a truly wonderful lens.
