Iam a newbie around here who recently got a 350D and was looking for a zoom for daytime outdoor sports. I know the Sigma 50-500 is heavy and too slow for low light. How does it compair in sharpness to say the Canon 70-200 f4 L?

The Canon is better, but (of course) you loose the reach. If you can afford the Canon (an dyou can get close enough to your subject) it should do a better job.

There is also the slow focusing issue, as the Sigma is f6.3 at 500mm.

This is a fair independent review: http://www.vividlight.com/articles/413.htm
"Did we already mention how fast this lens focuses? Even in relatively low light focus was fast and accurate. A real benefit for those of us shooting landscapes and wildlife is the fact that the front element doesn't rotate. So set you polarizer or split neutral density filter and forget it - if you can find one."

Slow is a relative term: f/6.3 is a 1/3-stop from f/5.6 - If you have an f/5.6 lens stop it down to f/6.3 and see the difference... The 50-500 EX also has 'HSM' which is both fast and quieter AF as compared to non-ultrasonic lens

The real question is will the 70-200 f/4L be as sharp (or fast) at the same reach with a teleconverter as a 50-500 without one??? :blah:
