For a Canon Rebel XTi that I am planning to order, I am trying to decide between these 2 choices:

1-Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens ($556)
2-Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens ($212)

Besides the lower price of the Sigma, I also like the possibility of using this lens to take picts of flowers at a short distance.

The other possibility that I contemplate is forking more $$ and going for a Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX OS APO RF Telephoto Zoom Lens ($940)

Any comments or suggestions on pros and cons for these lenses (or other suggestions within these price ranges)?

IMO 300mm is usually too short for birds

The Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX OS is preferable; However if you don't need OS the Tamron is a bit longer:

If you prefer a little faster AF, there's always the Bigma: http://www.pbase.com/nhl/sigma_50_500

the 50-500 is a good lens for still birds while its not bad for tracking brids in flight too.

But overall my vote will be for the 50-500.

If u can wait i would def checjk the soon to hit the market sigma 150-500 OS. THis IMHO has the best range from 50-500 with the OS
