Hi, I have a 50mm 1.8, but went out and bought a 85mm 1.8 for a little more distance for the basketball shots I want to take. I am kinda OCD with my stuff, and was thinking of putting a filter on it to keep it clean. Will it slow it down inside for these type of shots?

It really only degrade the image a bit. To slow down the lens you will need a ND filter.

No. A protection filter won't affect exposure enough to notice, but a cheap filter could cause flare from all the indoor light sources.

I use a haze 1 filter when I shoot at the beach because of sea spray or when I shoot in a dusty environment to protect the lens, but do not use any for normal conditions. So birders use them as they are running around in the woods and need added protection. So there are times you want protection.

I never use filters (except sometimes polarizing filters)
A lens/camera must withstand without filters (EACH filter deteriorates the image quality to endure), otherwise there is no monetary value. But if someone believes to "filter wonder" ... let him be ... |
