Maybe it's just me, but why do they have to make them look like something out of a 70s Sci-Fi film (not in a good way)? I'm taking about the ones that are white/off-white and black.

I have a silver Digital Rebel (black was more expensive for some reason:sad, and I think a white/off-white L lens would look horrible with it.

Why not just make the whole lens black? :-)

The story according to the manufactuers...

Mostly thepeople who use those big lenses are sport and wildlife photographers. They sit outside for hours at a time in the hot sun. Black lenses get very hot, hot enough to start expanding the metal and affecting optical alignment, etc.

White lenses stay cooler.

How much cooler is anyone's guess, and it's probably more a marketing thing than anything else.

It's not just Canon who do this however, other manufacturers have white lenses too. Minolta/Sony certainly does, not sure of any others. I think all the Nikon lenses are black.

Besides if you were that concerned about aesthetics you wouldn't have got the silver camera. :blah:

You can get Nikon lenses in either black or white

-> you should get Pentax - Their 'L' lenses equivalent come in silver!

You can? Hmmm...I learn something new everyday. I thought Nikon lenses only come in black...that's why I thought when someone says "he went over to the dark side" it means they switched from Canon to Nikon. :G

I agree... hate the colour change. I thought their main excuse was because the flourite elements in tele lenses are sensitive to heat... But that's bogus becuase if you look at the construction model, you'll see some of the teles don't have flourite elements in them.

But if you ever tried one of those white/greyish lenses, the colour ends up being less important to you... (or it was for me)...

It doesn't mean I'm not annoyed with the different colour, anymore... I am! That's why I look at Sigma's teles... The 70-200... the 100-300... the 120-300... they all look very nice...

if someone wants to give me a couple of them, they would look beautiful to me, I wouldn't care if they were bright green.
