I am using my new Rebel XTi with the standard EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom(not sure if its wide angle or not). Any suggestions on how to get the best results(without barrel distortion but with even sharpness corner to corner) with this lens would be appreciated - best aperture, etc. NOTE: I am shooting outside on a tripod and did some test shots resulting in slight distortion.

According to theses data: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/len...3556/index.htm

Your best shot should be:
@ 55mm (for minimum barrel distortion)
and f/8-11 (for maximum sharpness)
-> however the extreme borders will always be problematic with this lens... (according to the measured data)

Best bet is a macro - theses lense are designed to have flat-field
