Hi Everyone

My Canon 17-85 has stopped working with both my 20D and 350D when using the popup flash.

I am well covered from 50mm upward, but I need a decent replacement in the 17-50 range.

For a similar price range to the 17-85, what would you suggest. Image quality is by far the biggest factor to me - IS is nice, but not necessary.

Btw - I'm open to all 3rd party lenses too and I do most of my shooting at the wider end. One other considerationis that the lens must be able to work on a full frame camera.

Two models I'm looking at are the Canon 17-40Land the Sigma 17-35EX

John....
A year or so ago, I got the canon 16-35mm L lens and have had wonderful results from it...I dont know if canon makes it anymore but you might want to look into it....I dont know if the 17-40 was an equal replacement for the 16-35, but like I said, I have had good results from the 16-35...

Thanks for that John, they do still make it and its in a price league of its own. The 17-40L is a sort of poor mans alternative.

You might want to check the Tamron 17-35... full frame as well
It might be on a league of its own - At least according to the measured Imatest MTF's this lens outresolved both L even in the borders (could be attributed to Nikon's body):
