Well, my pictures are still pretty crappy, and sadly with this new lense I can no longer blame the equipment

But here's one of the shots I managed to get inbetween raidclouds.

I am curently looking for the same advise and i am looking at the 28-300mm IS USM lens.
To me it looks like a great lens to shoot nature and landscape portrait and everything.
a great allaroud lens.

It's really not the same advice is it???
1. The original poster asked for something longer (he already has a 70-300)
2. His need is also for a faster lens
3. $1000 was the max budget

The 28-300 is none of the above:
1. Can't take a TC without loosing autofocus (i.e. for 400mm or more)
2. the 28-300 is as slow as his current 70-300 f/4 - 5.6 lens
3. It also costs more than $1000
-> Portrait and landscape was never part of the original considerations...
