I am a newbie trying to decide between the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM & the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lenses to use as an all purpose lens to use with with my new 5D camera.

I would appreciate hearing opinions about these two lenses and if one is superior to the other for studio portraits which is a favorite hobby right now.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Counrtyboy and welcome to the forums.

I have not played with both lenses, only the 24-105 on the 5D as this is the lens of choice for my friend who is in the final 3 for Master Photographer of the Year (wedding category) here in the UK. Neither lens is perfect, it seems there have been build issues with the 24-70 and the 24-105 has quite a bit of distortion when at 24mmk but from the data I would choose the 24-105. With full frame I would not say that 70mm is long enough for portraits, generally 90mm is a good place, so the extra length of the latter is good.

Have a look at the following two links which will give you more detail on the lenses.
