Love the EFS 17-85 but it just isn't getting the job done in low light. Mostly this will be forindoor portraits.Any recommendations in the <$500 range? I'm considering the Tamron17-50 2.8, any others I should look at?

The Canon 17-55mm IS version of course
... or you can wait for the Tokina 16-50 f/2.8

Isn't the canon counterpart (24-70 2.8L) about $1200?16-35 f2.8L $1500?

ETA: Tamron has ---

17-35 2.8 ($300)

17-50 2.8 ($450)

28-75 2.8 ($400)

I guess I have to decide on sacrificing the wide end vs. theshort tpend. I'll try them out in-store and see...

But they are all full-frames
-> Check their MTF! i.e. check their MTF's against the 'digital only' like your EF-S 17-85 for sharpness

Ditto with:
17-35 2.8 ($300)
28-75 2.8 ($400) - may be
-> The older full-frame designs in general lack in contrast/sharpness when compared to the newer 'digital only' lenses like the 17-50 f/2.8 ($450) - Of course when you pay for the L you also get better materials like real metal vs composite/plastic (but with it comes the weight)

-> The Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 is also a 'digital-only' and so far their newer designs have proven to be excellent in all counts
