Well, the answer depends on what the light levels and distances are.

For dance you're probably better off with a flash or strobe solution as DOF will be an issue.

What low light action sports are you planning to shoot? At what level (i.e. college, high school, elementary school).

Hey man,

I am shooting latin american dance competitions myself.

I shoot with 300d, Sigma EX 24-70mm 2.8 and most importantly a flash. I got Promaster 7500DX.

Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 EX is a decent lens but it has a bit slower focus then I would like and it is a bit soft wide open especially at 70mm. So I shoot mostly at f4 and ISO 800, shutter 1/200.

I am looking to change my lens to Sigma 17-70mm. I tried it at a store and liked how fast the focus was. I thought since I shoot at f4 ... the f4.5 of 17-70mm at 70 will do fine for me.

Here are a couple of other threads I have started with th esame questions you got, I hope they may be helpfull.

Hi John

Well considering Indoor Sports BKB, Volleyballl and Wrestling. In regards to Dance Rooms vary from poor ligthing low ceiling rooms (VFW'S) to Large Ballrooms with ligthing for Video Recording. Also occasional convention hallsas well.

Do own flashes 580X and 420X.

So what do you think???

Well, I'm going to assume your sports are at the highschool level or below (i.e. not college). If that's the case, 2.8 isn't usually good enough. The 85 is the better buy in those cases - and at 1/3 of the cost. Especially since you already have the 70-200 2.8. I just don't see you getting much good use from the 24-70 in those situations.

For the dance competitions, in the vfw style places, bouncing the 580 is the way to go. If you really want to increase your odds, get the external battery pack which will really increase your refresh times and battery life. For the larger halls, I would think a multiflash setup with both flashes. If you have access, I would suggest mounting them on 10-12' stands from 2 corners just off the dance floor so the light is firing down. But multi-flash setups are not something I have a lot of familiarity with. NHL is the flash guru here. Hopefully he can give you some advice on the best way to set-up the 2 flashes for the ballroom shots. But in the VFW situation, I wouldn't think you would even need a 2nd flash .

85mm sounds a good options. But u have a good flash, and the 70-200 f2.8

i am guessing that would work out well in most situations.

and a question- why do u have both 70-200 F4 and f2.8 just curious
