I didn't realize the Canon 17/55/2.8 EF-S IS USM has 2 different mounts - plastic and metal? The latter is $1000+. Is it worth it to purchase the more expensive mount?

It doesn't come in two mounts. The 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens is a pro quality, fast optic that is about as good as it gets. Maybe you are confusing it with the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 lens, which does not have IS, has a plastic mount (I think), and is not playing in the same optical sandbox as the f/2.8 IS lens. If you can swing the $1000 price tag, the 17-55 f/2.8 IS will become your standard lens, and (in my opinion) is well worth the cost. If you buy just one top of the line lens for your kit in any given year, start with a lens that will see the most use on your camera. Get the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM lens, and never regret spending the money.
