I just ordered thr Tamron for $429 delivered.

I considered all leneses under $600.

My understadning from reading many reviews and advice from knowledgable people here are as follows:

Tamron advantages:
Focus faster and more accurately
Better Sharpeness
Less flare and CA

Many are comparing the Tamron to the much more expensive Canon 17-55 IS that sells for around $1000.

I still pine for that Canon 17-55, but suspect its a consumerism "want", not a true photographic "need." The focus motor is not silent, but does focus fast, albeit with a little churning. But I found it to be more accurate and sharper (don't know if the MTF charts back me up on this, and frankly don't really care) than the Sigma 24-70 2.8.

All with the Tamron (in low, natural light)before USM:

I just got the 17-50 tonight. It is really nice. I like the solid feeling. It seems very sharp in my limited testing.
