JLC....
The 1.4x does work nicely on the 20D...Depending on your lens, you might get a "seek and find" at times on your focusing...I have taken alot of surfing shots with it and it may be because of the movement of the camera following the surfers that causes this, but be aware that it may happen...I minimize that by using center focus only...

the teleconverter is more dependant on the lens than the camera, well as long as the mount is for the proper camera anyway. So if you are using it with a Tamron lens it should be fine. I have found that using a lens and TC made by the same manufacturer usually gives you the best image quality.

I was looking into the Tamron 200-500mm lens at a store today. NOt that heavy. Question is, With my Canon RebelXT and this Tamron 200-500, could I also use the 1.4 tamron converter? Will I get anything out of the shots? , I mean will it tighten the subject or distort and not be as sharp? Hope anyone can follow my line of questioning here. Thanks for any input.

You can use the 1.4x on the 200-500 but you will lose the autofocus
-> when you add a 1.4x you'll lose an f-stop which will make the lens aperture too small for the camera to focus although the combination will 'tighten' up the shot - This is why manay folks get a faster lens so they can pile on with 1.4x or 2x( 2 stops loss)...
