Cant make up my mind. money is short right now and i have to make the choice between, purchasing a 300mm cheaper lens or getting a TC converter for my 70-200 F4 L lens. The converter would be the EF 1x4. This would bring my lens up to about a 280m focal length. I had a Ef 100-300 but went with the L lens and i really can see a difference in the quality of my shots but its a little short for wildlife. i got good shots before out ofthe EF 100-300 in the wildlife area.

which deal will give the better quality shots, Im told a TC will degrade photo quality

Getting a cheaper lens would not bring the IQ up I'm afraid...
How much money is the 70-200 f/4L + EF 1.4x Combo?
-> Selling the 70-200 f/4L and getting the Sigma may be a better alternative (and why IMO this L is so popular on Ebay...):
According to Photozone measured MTF results, the Sigma 100-300 EX (without a TC) is not only better than the 70-200L @ 280mm (with TC), but also a full-stop faster for not much more $ (at least in the states):

-> When used with a 1.4x (i.e @ 420mm f/5.6), the 100-300 EX will outscore my 100-400L IS USM f/5.6, and this Sigma is not a slow poke either:

I got the L lens mainly for the walkabout stuff and it is seriously sharp and very obviously better than anything Ive ever owned. I could buy the sigma 100-300 rather than a TC 1x4 converter but I am not keen on selling the white lens as it gives me stunning results.

So will this Sigma EX, just compare the last MTF tables from Photozone:
The Sigma @ 300mm (without TC) exceed the white L @ 280mm (with TC)...
-> The reason I'm suggesting selling the white lens is because you said you're short on funding + why keep two lenses with the same reach when the black one is a full-stop faster and will give you the reach of a 420mm (instead of just 280mm)

Im really happy with this lens, I really would like a lens that goes to 400mm that wont break the bank balance mainly for those wildlife shots but cant seem to find anything. I had an EF 100-300 that was great, Ive never owned a sigma, I have a Tokina wide angle thats pretty good SO Im not against buying other brands at all. As I don't know much about sigma, what is the equivalent of the USM type lenses canon produce?, for instance what would be the same lens in a sigma as the EF 100-300 usm? and do the sigma autofocus as fast as canon usm lenses?

I'm afraid I already broke the bank!!! :-) :G

See here: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses.asp
Instead of Ultra-Sonic Motor Sigma calls their version Hyper-Sonic Motor

It is in a different class than your EF 100-300 USM altogether. The all-metal EX series are Sigma professional line more akin to the Canon's L with than any ordinary plastic/composite EF lens...

Do you think anything in wildlife are this fast? (and this was with a 1.4x teleconverter)

Hi aladyforty. Buy the 1.4 tc. Not only will you not see any degradation of your shots when you use it with the 70-200 f4, but you can use it on about 15 to 20 other Canon lenses. I also have that lens and have never been dissatisfied with my results when used with the 1.4 tc. The 1.4 tc will cost you about 240 US $ and will give you 280mm as you say and also allow autofocus. The 70-200 is a great lens is it not?

Hi, my name is David and I'm a lensaholic.
I think I read somewhere that "He who dies with the most lenses wins" I only have 11 right now plus a 1.4x and 2x teleconverter and I know of several more I would like to have.
