For small bird photography, which lens would better suit...I checked out Fred Miranda and the canon got a 9.4 and the Tamron 8.8. But I have seem some beautiful shots with the tamron. I would probably use a 1.4x converter with the canon. Thanks, Donna

Hi Donna

My friend uses the 400 F5.6 with great success but not with the 1.4 extender. I use the 300 F4 with the extender and get some decent shots. I'll probably move up to the 300 F2.8 soI can use the 1.4 and 2X converters. Sorry I can't help with the Tamron.

if u want the zoom i would suggest the 100-400. A bit slow but the IS is good though doesnt play much when the bird is in motion.

th 400mm L prime is comparitively light and sharp wide open.

One more lens to consider would be the 100-300 F4 from sigma. With 1.4x its sharp wide open even at 400mm.

Honestly from what i have been trying even 400mm is not long enuff a reach. I have the 120-300 and i feel short even at 600mm. Though i am trying it out on a FF, i still feel 600mm is minimum length for SMALL BIRDS.

thats why i wish i can buy a 2X crop camera and a 400mm f2.8 lens :G:?:blahD2X is good..but i have too many canon stuff to sell now )

with a 2x tele i would be at 1600 and almost at the same speed as the 400 L lens
