Ok - so... I'm looking for an upgrade to my 75-300mm III F4-5.6 Non-USM.
$500-600 range.

Right now - I think there's just something wrong with my lens.
It focuses REALLY slow, and the attached picture seems to be the sharpest I can get from it. The legs are out of focus - but the feather detail is still poor.

On my D30 - the fuzz/soft factor is half better... but there's also half the megapixels...

Shot:
300mm @ 1/90s @ F/5.6 @ ISO200 on 10D with current lens.

I don't know if a 70-200 F4/L Non-IS with a 1.4xTC works well or not; I was also considering maybe saving a smidgen more and going for the Sigma 80-400mm EX APO OS. Or maybe a Sigma 135-400... dunno!

Anyways - Also - I've attached another picture - if you look at the bottom right, there's that joint that holds the lines together - I'm looking at the edge on that because it doesn't confuse with the reflection of the sky.

Shot: 1/500s @ F/5.6 @ 125mm @ ISO200 on D30

Help me spend my money!

I'm in the UK and the price here was £369 ($725) but prices in the US are usually a lot cheaper than here. The IS work very well I have managed to handhold at 300mm at 1/100sec which might not seem all that great but I have trouble holding the kit lenssteady at times..

Second the recommendation of the 70-300 IS. The glass in that lens is near L lens in quality. I think you would get much better pics from this lens than the 70-200 L with teleconverter.
