Ok i already have the sigma 17-70 that i enjoy,, but now i want to buy the Canon 17-40 L, my camera is the 400D so what really holds me back is the zoom range of only 40 but i think i read somewhere that on my 1.6 crop the zoom range would be like my sigma 70mm but the wide angle would be like 28 though is that true. And on image quality would the 17-40 surpass the 17-70

i had the sigma 17-70 and loved it but i sold it and got the canon 17-55. the constant 2.8 is great. my future son in law just graduated college and i took a picture from a ramp above the crowd .there was over 1000 students and the lighting was ok but the picture turned out great. just giving you something else to think about.

The 1.6 crop factor works for all lenses you mount on your 400D. So the 17-70 gives you the field of view of a 27-112mm lens in 35mm equivalent, and 17-40 gives you 27-64mm.

I don't have either lens, but used a borrowed 17-40 for about a month. The build quality is great, very fast and precise AF, great contrast and saturated colours. I suppose it's a great lens for a full frame camera - as an UWA lens. On my 350D most of the time I used it at about 40mm and wished the lens was longer, but I'm not really into landscapes and YMMV. Several friends of mine have 17-70 Sigma and are very happy with it, works great as a walkaround lens for them.

17-55 f/2.8 looks like a really great lens, but the price is high . I ended up buying a 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 usm and 70-200 f/4 L usm. Works for me, and for occasional landscapes I use a Panorama Pro prog :-).

If you want a wide angle lens for your 400D, may be you should look at Canon 10-22mm or Sigma 10-20mm.

Well the 17-55 is to expensive for me,, but was just wondering on how the 17-40 performs on a 1.6 crop, and if i did buy it i need something in between 40-70 then because i am gonna get the 70-300 IS NEW and i already have the 50 1/8 ll.

17-40L has excellent build quality, but it mutual range with 17-70 it is not better at all. Actually, even at F8, at 17mm, borders of the picture (if shooting distant objects) are still very blury. 17-70 has quite sharp borders at 17mm F4, and it is exceptional at F8.

In 17-40L you pay it's built quality and FF compatibility. Trust me, for 400D, 17-70 is far better choice.

Yeah, consider the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens. This is one sharp lens I've used with my 30D. I've tried the Canon 17-40mm, the 17-35mm f2.8, and the 16-35mm f2.8. The Tamron came second only to the 16-35mm in terms of sharpness and contrast at 1/3 the cost.
