If I was not to use a tripod mount ring with my 70-200 f/4 L-series on my tripod what's the worst can happen. I just don't have one yet. I have a bogen tripod.

It's not the worse problem as the lens is not overly heavy (if it were a f2.8 then that would be really different) however I personally would not want to do it for a long time as it is adding load to the mount which would normally be supported.

Or you can wait to buy the next L lenses - depending on which one you pick (i.e. 70-200 f/2.8 or 100-400) the tripod collar is common and interchangeable...

-> On the Sigma for example the same tripod collar can be used on all their lenses from the 120-300 down to the 150mm macro... (and without having to take the lens off)
