What would you consider the best between these :

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8

Canon 17-85mm IS

Canon 17-40mm L f/4

Any other suggestions for a good allround lens ?

I would add the Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 to the top of your list...

You think the Tokina is better then the Tamron 18-50mm f/2.8 which is very highly rated ?

I like the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

There is also:

Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5

Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 MACRO

It depends on your photographic needs and how much you're willing to spend. Best for me may not be best for you. :-)

Since I own the Tamron and love it my vote goes for it. I can't speak of the 17-85 but when I was choosing the photography shop i buy from had the Tamron and the Canon 17-40 f4. I shot both with my 30D and ended up choosing the Tamron. The copy I shot and ended up buying IMHO outpreformed the Canon.

Best thing to do is go shoot all three lenses and then pick the one you like the best. Then you will be happy.

Here is the first review I have found of the $650 Tokina NHL mentioned..

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/len...ikon/index.htm

It was not clear to me from the reviewer whether he felt it was the best lens out there. Normally he compares lenses to its contemporaries.

It is certainly a solid $225 more then well regarded Tamron 17-50m, but cheaper then the Canon and Nikon equivalent.

It only came out in May 2007 after a year or so on the rumor mill.

My Opinion is not worth much but I would drop the 17-85 from your best list and round it out with Canon 17-55 IS F2.8.
