I am looking for a good telephoto lense for some longer distance wildlife photos to use with a rebel XTi. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I currently have a 300mm lense but want something with some more umph to it. Any prices to go along with suggestions?

How much are you looking to spend?
(and how many lbs are you willing to carry... ?)

The weight is no issue at all. I would like to spend less than 2000 but that isn't set in stone necessarily.

Is your 300mm lens a fast one, ie f2.8 or f4? If so you could try a 1.4x or 2x converter. That would be a cheap option.

It's a 1.4-5.6. I'm still relatively new to this photography thing so I'm trying to learn as I go.

One more question. I have little knowledge of these converters and may be interested in this route. Can someone explain how these work and what I may gain from this? Is the 1.4 nothing more than a magnification number? Again, sorry for the ingnorance.

This sounds as if you have a zoom (with variable aperture) in which case a 1.4x teleconverter will not work!
-> A 1.4x TC will drop the lens aperture by 1-stop which will bring the lens down from f/5.6 to f/8 at the 300mm position which is too dark for the camera AF system and you will lose the autofocus... Manual focus will be fine though or some generic TC can fool the camera to hunt, but their results are quite spotty

< under $1000
o Sigma 100-300 but f/4 which will let you use a 1.4xTC (-> 420mm f/5.6) but still quite sharp
o Canon 400 f/5.6 L

< under $2000
o Tamron 200-500
o Sigma 50-500
o Sigma 80-400 OS
o Canon 100-400 f5.6 L IS

under 2000 u can also pick a 120-300 Sigma. thats 600mm at f5.6 with a 2X.

Is it heavy??- Yes a bit but much much less lighter at 600mm compared to any other lens.

The images from this lens at 600mm is brilliant.

Where can you still get a new one for that price. I thought the going price of a new unit was now up to $2700?

I agree the 120-300 2.8 is fantastic. But don't think you can find it new for under $2000.

and I agree!

As much as I hated to, I had to leave my 500mm f/4 L home on my last multi-islands hopping trip and took the 120-300 f/2.8 instead (with a 2xTC for 600mm):

There's only so much you can carry when living out of the suitcase...
This lens is a steal for under $2000
