I am interested in getting a lens for birding. I have Canon 70-300mm IS lens but it is not long enough and I was told it doesn't take 1.4x teleconverter well.

Iam comparing Tamron 200-500 vs. Sigma 170-500mm lens for this purpose. It will be mated with 30D. Can't decide which one to get? What would be other options?

You might also look at the Sigma 50-500 EX, it has the advantage of HSM for faster focusing.

I have seen excellent results with both the Sigma 50-500 and the Tamron 200-500. The Sigma 170-500 doesn'tmeasure up to either of those from the results I have seen from it. This is strictly from postings from others and their comments, as I have not used any of the three.

I agree too - Stay away from the 170-500!

I would say the Tamron 200-500 is the sharper (and lighter) one; However the 50-500 EX has the faster HSM from Sigma like Caboose suggested, so there's a trade off...

+ Don't forget the Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX with a 1.4TC it's still a very sharp lens @ 420mm f/5.6 also with HSM and the lowest cost!

What about IQ of Canon 100-400L? Would it take 1.4X TC well?

I have the lens and IQ is OK with a 1.4x TC but not stellar. But, unless you're using a 1-series body, you'll lose autofocus.

The Tamron is much lighter than the Sigma 100 - 300 F4 or the Canon 100 - 400 L. I have the Sigma 100 - 300 F4 and I love it. I don't think it's long enough for birding, even with the 1.4 tele-converter. I think I went with the Sigma over theTamron mostly due to build quality and the constant F4 aperture.
