Last Christmas I bought a XTI for my wife. She really loves it. Her birthday is coming up, so I want to buy her a lens. The kit lens is OK, but she wantsmore zoom capability while still not having to switch between lenses very often. We mostly just take pictures of our daughter (very active 3 year old) and with a second one due any day it's only going to get used more. I would like to keep it under $400 if possible. I like Canon products, but if there is another brand out there, please also include those. Thank you very much. BTW - I have been reading a lot of reviews, but the more I read the more confused I get.

If you want a lens that will cover a lot of what the point and shoot cameras do then look at the Sigma 18-125 or 18-200. They are both compromises in the aperture and you get some distortion but for an all round shooting lens from wide to telephoto you could do a lot worse. Another way that shots can be improved as well as the lens would be to look at an external flash such as the Sigma DG500 or Canon 430EX.

Canon 24-85 EF can be had for under $200. Nice lens.
