For a Canon EOS 40D camera, which among these lenses shall perform better, the Canon EF 16-35 F2.8L MKII or the Canon EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS?And why?

According to the tests at slrgear.com...

The 17-55 has more range, IS and is quite a lot sharper over all the shared focal lengths, particularly at f2.8 and f4.

The 16-35 has better build quality and the standard L coatings, etc. which give it the L look.

On the 40D the 17-55 seems like a much better option to me.

I agree...

However some folks desire to get in the "L" club, see a full-frame in their future... or waterproof series 1

Some how i stayed with the 12-24 even when going 1d series. 24-105 stays to keep it a weather proof camera while i havent got a chacne to use the 12-24 on a really demanding weather condition.

Even thought of exchanging the 12-24 for 16-35 but never got the need to do it

On the 40D i am sure the 17-55 IS makes a better choice.

Thats the only f2.8 lens with a IS in that range from canon and i personally prefer IS for late evening shots in that focal length. I do not have a really steady hands
