The photozone review of this updated basic lens is pretty promising, especially for those who are looking for a light weight, small walkaround lens.

Except for the distortion, that's quite a lens...
The term "you get what you pay" for really doesn't apply anymore

Wow - from the worst cheap kit lens to the best in one quick step.

Rebel XTI + 18-55 IS = 580+180 = $760

Anyone care to do a double-blind test against ANY other DSLR on the market with prints of 8x12?
