Between the Canon 50 F1.2L and 85 F1.2L lenses, which among them shall be more suited for a Canon 40D camera with a 1.6 crop factor? And why?
Thanks.

Both are equally suited depending on what equivalent focal length you want.

Is this a trick question?

That depends on what you want to use one for. ;-)

For example, if you're looking for a fast lens for indoor sports, I'd suggest an 85mm f/1.8 instead (because it will focus twice as fast as Canon's newest II version of the 85mm f/1.2 in low light, based on reports I've seen, even though the newest 85mm f/1.2 is faster than the old one).

But, for portraits, I'd probably lean towards the 85mm f/1.2L, just for the perspective you'd have with a longer focal length from further away (provided you have room to use it). That's just a matter of preference.

If you take more photos in closer quarters, the 50mm may be a better bet.

The bokeh is very good from both lenses, based on photos I've seen.

There are pros and cons to any of them.

Why not have both? :-)
-> I'll go with the 50 f/1.2L since it's a lot cheaper and with the 1.6x crop its perfect for the 40D
With the difference in $$$ get the 85mm f/1.8 as well for the action shot!

option NHL sounds a better option. no kidding about the 85m 1.8. very fast, very good wide open and very cheap too.

50mm f1.2 is around 1200 qwhile the new 85mm is around 1600

the difference gets u a 85mm f1.8 as well as a filter for ur 50mm

Yes, much better NHL option than the 85L + 50 1.4.

Although I liked the sharpness of the 50 1.4 just fine, I didn't like the build quality or USM motor.

The 85 f1.8 has a nice metal body and proper ring USM and has a much nicer feel than the 50 f1.4.

So the 50 L focusses faster than the 50 1.4, and the 85 1.8 focusses faster than the 85L -> means you get faster focus with the NHL option!! And of course 2 lenses for the same price as the 85L.

But on a crop camera you could also say that you could go for the 50L as the tighter portrait lens and go instead for a 28mm f1.8 for the normal angle of view.

I got a chance to use the 85mm at a tradeshow the other day. Big disapointment. Due to the size of the internal glass, the focus motor struggles to ajust it and therefore autofocus is appallingly slow.

Image quality on the otherhand is top notch.

If u had tested 85 L Mark II u are there for a surprise with the mark I much slower. But this is more of a portrait lens as far as i see it. Not exactly an action lens though i have used it for action(keepers are somedays(almost everyday)really low :blah

i believe it was designed with a purpose to sell the 85f1.8. If the AF in 851.2 was as quick as the 85f1.8 i am sure most would have just bought the 85L instead of the f1.8 just for its sharpness wide open.
