I'm thinking about getting either a 18-55mm is or a 17-85mm is lens for a walkaround lens, there seems to be so many good reviews on the inexpensive 18-55 is and some of the reviews of the 17-85 isaren't so favorable at almost three times the cost ,anybody have any opinions on this choice? I currently have a 40d a 70-200mm f4 is and a 50mm compact macro thanks, Alan

The 17-85 has better build quality, better range, better AF, is reasonably sharp, probably the same IS and is a good all-rounder.

But the new 18-55 IS is incredibly sharp and has to work less hard because of the smaller zoom range.

I think there is no real contest considering the price difference. 18-55 for sure!

Sounds good to me but where can we find it at that price. Seeing as I just got a Canon 40D for Christmas.
