I'm trying to weigh up the pro's and con's of the following:

I recently purchased the 18-55mm 3.5 - 5.6 lens as an upgrade to the kit lens for my 400d and found it a significant improvement over the kit lens the cost of £109 for the lens and selling the kit lens for £40 made it a good investment.

I am now looking to replace my Sigma 70- 300mm DG APO macro lens, with either the new canon 50- 250mm IS or the significantely more expensive canon 70-300mm IS lens which will take me more time to aquire the extra cash or should i stick with the Sigma.

Opinions required as to whether the cost is worth it for the improved quality or not.

regards

Geoff

From the little I have seen (one review with pictures), the 55-250 IS is not that much of an improvement as was the 18-55 IS over the non-IS kit lens. I would wait until you see some more reviews of the 55-250IS on the net. For the price, along with image stabilization, it sure sounds tempting though!

Michi

Thanks my views are similar.

It is the urge to buy a new toy that is the problem.

I had the same problem when i bought my flashgun Sigma EF 530 DG Super, Speedlite 430 ex or 580EX II.

I bought the Sigma at £150 and am very satisfied but the lens is a different story.

I just picked up the 70-300mm IS and really like it. I heard from other sites that it wasn't worth itto be used as a paperweight, but I disagree its been really nice so far.

Heres a few I just took with my new 70-300mm IS.

This is my leaf trapped under ice.

This is at full zoom.

The background was bad so it is a very tight crop.

This just stuck out at me so I played with the colors.

I only received mine this morning ( a week to deliver supposed to be stocked in the UK but shipped from US to UK then delivered from UK)so will not get anything worthwhile until the weekend. But i have played around and the IS works well you can see the difference through the view finder when you switch between IS and no IS.

But i need to try it on some real shots.
