I've just picked up a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM and I have to say after the first play in my lounge this is stunning!!! I've used IS before but not really tired to see how far I can stretch it so just dialed in 1/20th and shot at 200mm on my 1D mkIII so with it's 1.3x crop we are talking 35mm equiv focal length of 260mm then the safe shutter speed is approx 1/250s or 1/320s so at 1/20th we are in the 3-4 stop realm which I thought should be a good test as they claim 3 stops.

And here are the results.... 100% crop of the centre focus point area, straight from camera with no sharpening.

1/20, f2.8, ISO500

I really should put away the box from the mkIII but the text made a good target and showed that focus didn't need adjusting.

congrats

its a good lens. I would call the 70-200 F4 IS the great lens coz the images are much sharper and crisper from the F4.

The contrast from this lens is superb. I love it whe ur just shooting jpegs.

Well I'm impressed, now if I could just find that lens new for about 1/4 the price I get one too. Think it's going to be a while before I can get that lens but someday.

I'm liking it and it's one of the few perks of not having a wife or family to worry about. I've had a good month for new toys with the 1D mkIII, Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 (back up for when shooting weddings just in case the 24-105mm f4 L decides to play up, and the Sigma 12-24 to replace the 10-20 as I only have one crop camera now and 12mm on the 5D is wwwwwwiiiiiiiiiiiiiddddddddeeeeeeeee LOL.

So for me Christmas came in Feb

Hope to be able to show some real shots from it soon.

Today was the first chance to shoot in anger with the 70-200 and I'm impressed, it easily outperformed the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 which I used previously (rarely now that I have the 120-300mm f2.8 ). I only took a few shots at one of the field hockey games I was covering just to ensure that it was working OKin the real world and no problems at all. The AF is amazing and even at f2.8 and 200mm it is better than I expected as this is reported to be the weak spot.

One thing that I did discover though is that after using the mkIII my 30D is sloooooooooow, 5fps is nothing!!! LOL Oh and the viewfinder is mi nature as well.

Glad you're having fun the the new lenses. Nice to hear that the 70-200 F2.8L IS is performing well, that the lens my wife wants me to get next. Sure I said, "right after you get a real job" I bought a comfortable couch for a reason.:G

Let me get this straight - your wife wants you to buy a $2000 lens?

Sounds like a keeper.
