I am buying a 40D. I plan to getthe Canon 70-200 F/4L IS. Trying to watch my pennies while I learn the basics I am looking for a good 2nd general lens. I can get the 28-135 IS kit lens for about $200 more or the 18-55 IS lens for $175 that reportedly is a good lens although the build quality may not be the best. An alternative for a good all around lens is the 17-85 IS priced at $490. If I do this it has me starting to look towards the lens I really want the 17-55 2.8L at $999. If only the Spring rebates program would start very soon.

Any suggestions?

The 17-85 EF-S IS f3.5 makes a very nice walk around lens. I have both the 17-85 and the 28-135 and both are good starter lenses. The 17-85 gets more use from me because of the 17mm wide (27.2 compare to 35mm standards) end, allowing me to get in closer to the subject and still keep everything in the frame I need.
