Can you guys give some suggestion? I am just entering the DSLR world.

Which lens do you guys suggest for 450D / Rebel XSi?

My goal is (listed so that most important ones first):

1) Mostly for indoor and outdoor people photo. I assume normally I will take photos from about 2-5 meters (6 to 15 feet) away from the subject, with half body portrait photo.
2) Need some zoom, so that I do not need to move front or back too much. 3) May take some outdoor scenery photos.

(Note the 450D / Rebel XSi has a lens factor of 1.6x)

What are the suggested lens? Also, should I go with Canon only lens, or any good third party lens? There are 500$ in my pocket for it -- well, up to 800$ if it is a must. ;-).

PS: This will be my only camera so no need to consider upgrade or compabilities issues with future cameras.

Thanks a lot.

In your price range I would recommend the 17-85 IS as a nice complement to the 450D.

Do you mean this one:

That url gives it pretty bad rate.

Does anyone use Tamron lens?

You need to decide what features you want and make a choice, I hate to break the news, but at your budget you are going to have to make some compromises.

What focal length range?
What apertures?
Do you need IS?

You also need to use a better lens review site.

Try one of these:

There are probably 30 or so lenses to choose from which could satisfy your stated requrements. The 17-85 IS is a good all-rounder at a reasonable price, but it is not without its problems.
