I just recently picked up a 400D body and 50mm f1.8 prime lens. I'm looking for an "everyday" lens (who isn't! :lol and was looking at:

1.Canon's 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 USM

2. Canon 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM

3. Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5

Based on some reviews I've read, the Sigma seems to be preferred over the 17-85mm Canon lens and has a slightly better price point.

Any thoughts on which lens might be the better lens? I tend to take a lot of car pictures but also take some city landscape (architectural, I guess) pictures and an occasional portrait. I've also been known to take car pictures at tracks and dragstrips. TIA

i have owned the canon 24-85 and the sigma 17-70. i found the 17-70 to be a really good lens and considering the price it would be a good choice for what you want.

I've had both Sigma 17-70 and EF-S 17-85 and i like my 17-85 better, it seems more sharper to me and has better color

Thanks for the feedback. Based on other reviews I read, I ended up picking up the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8. Not quite as wide as I'd like but seemingly apretty goodstarter lens at good price.

Update:

Got the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 lens just in time to take some pix for my friend. He decided to sell his weekend car and wanted some photos taken of it for his on-line ads. I used the Sigma lens for most of the shots and I was pleased with the results.
