What's wrong with using the Canon 1.4? Afterall, it was made & designed for use with the "L" series lenses & EOS system. Secondly, you won't find a better build than this one. If you've spent money on an "L" lens, why couple it with a cheap, off brand piece of equipment? You may be sorry you did so down the road when you're wondering why your shots aren't looking the way you thought they would. JMOA. I have no problems or regrets with mind.

The biggest reason to buy off-brand 1.4x teleconverter is for compatibility as the Canon one only fits certain lenses...

But that is true of the Sigma ones I have, too ... they only fit certain lenses. Whatever TC you purchase, be sure it fits/works withthe lenses you need it to! For that particular most-excellent lens, I strongly suggest Canon's own matched TC.

I understand your reasoning, but as "hgernhardtjr" responds as well, not all lenses are going to be adaptable to any one TC. Canon only has a handful of lenses capable of utilizing the 1.4 or 2.0 TC's. Even if you had a Sigma, Tokina, etc., you'd still have to see if that particular lens is capable of mounting to any one TC. Just because a Sigma, Tokina comes with a "Canon" mount does not mean its useable with that TC. As I said originally, if I have spent the $$$ on an "L" lens and am using the EOS system, why throw an "off brand" into the middle? If you're going to get full & total use from the system, keep everything compatable and with what each piece was designed for. JMO, but I've not experienced any problems by staying with the designed components!
