hi

Could someone explain what this means please,

The canon EF 70-300 IS USM lens isnt a EF-S lens, what impact does this have.

I am asking because i cant get hold of a EF-s 55-250 IS lens at a good price.
so im thinking of spending a bit more and getting the longer zoom lens, which would be handy.

I think USM means quieter focus and the ability to manual focus without flipping a switch (i dont think USM seems that important for me) where IS is very important option.

Basically it would cost me an extra £100 for the 70-300 IS

Be good to see some sample shots of the same image both as max zoom

Be great if someone could help me out on the choice as its an expensive mistake to make.

Thanks

Si

The fact that it is not an EF-S lens will have no real impact on your use of the lens. It simply means it can also be used on a FF body if you should later decide to.

USM is the Ultra Sonic Motor and yes, it means it will be quieter, however, there are two type of USM. Ring and Micro. The Ring type are the best and support full time manual focus. The Micro type do not. This is a micro USM and therefore does not support full time manual. Neither does the 55-250 you are trying to find.

Trying to work out between these two, because the 300 is nearly double the cost of the 250, why its that much more.

1. is the canon 70-300IS USM a better lens than the canon 55-250 IS in quality
2. how much closer to a subject can you get from 250 to 300 (i know its 50 but in reality whats the image like), i do like taking full zoom
3. The USM bit, i cant really see that helps massively, in this 300 lens.

help me pick...

Lookin forward to seeing some shots from it, maybe some comparisons with the FZ30? I will try and get out and do the same with my 55-250 see how it compares with the x12 of the pany.

update:

Forget best priced brands, unless you want no contact, maybe wait for 30 days for in stock items. Check out thier forum before ordering anything,

update:
The lens came today from "best priced Brands" ordered on the 24th June when it was aparently in stock

Surprised how heavy it is, and you can hear the motor moving the autofocus in a quiet room.
Nice fast accurate focusing, in and out doors.
the zoom ring is pretty stiff and definately wont creep at any angle (maybe it will when its worn in)

Hand held at 300mm zoom is, so far, amazing, you really can use it.

It only just fits in my lowepro slingshot 200 bag, on the camera, the lowepro slingshot 300 is a little wider, probably better suited.

Well post some pictures from the lens. I have been looking at the same lens, it just seems to be the best all around zoom to meet my needs too.
