I recently purchased a Sigma 28-200 DL lens for my Canon Elan 7E. This lens is supposed to work on the Canon Digital line as well. When I mount this lens on my 10D I get an error message of ERROR 99 when I turn the camera on. The camera recognizes the lens once when I mounted it to the camera. Any suggestions?

It may just be a bad electrical connection. I'd check the contacts on the lens mount of signs of oxidation, clean them and remount the lens.

It could also be a compatibility issue. It's not uncommon for some of the older Sigma lenses to have compatibility problems with newer camera models. Apparently, Sigma reverse engineered the camera to lens protocols, and sometimes missed features required for newer cameras.

Sometimes when that happens, Sigma can "rechip" a lens (install newer EEPROMs that understand how to work with newer cameras). But, I wouldn't count on it for that lens (they usually only do that with their higher end EX Series lenses, and they don't always have a way to upgrade one).

I'll move this thread down to our Canon Lenses forum, where Canon shooters more familiar with this lens may be able to give you some tips.

P.S.

If you scroll down to the Apr 13, 2003; 08:31 a.m. entry on this page, you'll see where someone quoted an old press release from Sigma about compatibility issues with the Elan 7, explaining that some lenses may need to be rechipped (and this list included the Sigma 28-200mm DL lens, although it may not be the exact same version as yours). So, you may want to call Sigma and ask if they can still do that for your lens (rechip it for compatibility with newer camera models).
