Can I not assume the XSi would perform as well if not better in those situations, given that I'm graduating up to a dSLR?

I hope I'm making sense here...
Are you using flash?

Indoors? Yes. Most of the time the flash is necessary. Why do you ask?

The DSLR will perform better than your digicam with on-board flash - mostly because you have better ISO performance - using ISO 400 or even 800 you'll have more ambient light in the shots. But, in the grand scheme of things, that performance is still pretty poor. And you won't get a lot more reach with the built in flash either - even on DSLRs the built-in flashes are pretty pathetic. You would be amazed at the quality gain an external / bouncable flash provides.

I can't tell you how much I love using my speedlite and how much it's needed indoors. You can go with a fast lens such as the 50mm F1.4 to increase the light that is hitting the sensor, but you don't always want that very shallow depth of field with every indoor shot.
