Do you think it matters much? How old the lens is. Do they change them that much over a few years to make a big difference? I am looking at the Canon 17-40mm.

Everything is a case-by-case basis. In the case of the 17-40 it really is a great lens for the price. I've usde on on a 1.6 and 1.3 crop body and it does well. It's not perfect - I'm sure the 16-35 2.8 is better in many ways but this is still a fabulous lens for the price. I think it will be a while before it gets redesigned.
