hello, i'm very new to DSLRs... just picked up the canon xti/400d a couple months ago with the stock ef-s 18-55mm lens.
in the near future, i will be taking a lot of outdoor full-body portraits (similar to the satorialist http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/ ) and some close product shots. i've been doing some reading on the canon ef 50mm 1.4 and 1.8...
right now, i'm leaning towards the 1.4 but wanted to get some input first before i take the jump. am i even going in the right direction? any help would be great.

thank you!!

As long as you have sufficient working distance a 50mm will be fine. For your stated purpose the 1.8 will be fine.

Another cool lens to consider is the Canon 85mm F/1.8 lens.

It's a really nice portrait lens. You can stand back about 20 feet from your subject and take a killer photo.

Very nice low light lens too.

I use the same lens when I am doing my motorcycle shots and portraits.
