Zooms are nice, but just one lens anywhere and it would have to be a fast 50mm prime. (or equivalent on a crop).

The majority of the time I will use my 24-105mm f4 on my 5D however if lighting ispoor then I will work with a 50mm prime. The majority of weddings I do are with the 5D/24-105 combo as well as a 1D MkIII and 70-200mm f2.8 IS as I find this gives the best coverage.

If using a crop camera then the 17-55mm f2.8 is not a bad option at all.

You could always try to zoom with your feet with the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8.

Even the Sigma 30 1.4 HSM is a pretty good one, as long as you get one that focuses right
