Just bought myself the new 50D and now i need to buy glass , i thought it would be a good idea to start with a standard bright lens like a 50mm f/1.4 , the Canon is probably a good choice but what about this new Sigma , i read around that it performs even better ?

Maybe someone has got another idea ?

Except on a crop camera a 50 is not a standard lens.

Try the Sigma 30 f1.4 or Canon 28 f1.8 instead.

The Sigma is certainly the best one at this moment, but obviously it comes at a larger cost: http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/..._c16/page2.asp

I'm not impressed by my EF 50 f/1.4
-> Canon needs to update this lens

Well thanks for the tips but i just bought a Canon 1.4 , i tried them both in the shopand i wanted something not too bulky so i went for the canon.

I got a good deal so i'll try it and if it doesn't please me i'll sell it with almost no loss at all.:-)

Make sure to check for that blue CA in the highlight area that I have reported before ( and also noted on dpreview) when wide open!
