New to SLR photography and I want to shoot low light with it. The area is lit but really poorly, its actually on a slow moving ride and ive seen some really good pictures done by amateurs, but have no way of finding out what kind of lenses were used. I know I really need to try shooting it to find out how it will turn out but I need to make a guess at a lense ahead of time and I cant think of similar conditions to try. Im basically not sure if a f1.8 will be enough or I need to go even lower to a f1.4, any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Steve's, I'm sure we can point you in the right direction. Are the photos you are talking about online so we can take a look, otherwise we might get completely the wrong idea and thus not give you the right info.

Thanks,

Mark
