Jerry - I know exactly what you're talking about. Fortunately I only shoot in one gym that is like you describe. It really depends on th type of team and level of play as to where the great shots are. I shoot in suburbia for schools with not great basketball programs. So there isn't as much action around the hoop itself like there would be with more athletic players or at higher levels. So for my schools I don't have to worry about action right under the hoop as much. For other schools I would.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"In those situations my suggestion is to set your exposure for where the 'money shots' are. If you've got a highly athletic team doing high layups / dunks those always make great shots so expose for the lighting at the rim at least for a quarter or half.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"That's the thing about sports shooting - you have to plan for the type of shot you want. It's a lot easier when shooting for newspaper since you need less shots than if you're shooting for print sales of the team. So you can sit on a type of shot until it occurs. The natural tendancy is to want to shoot everything.

Very well said. The level of play really dictates the kind of shot you can expect. As usual your advice is right on.
