I really enjoy shooting wildlife and birds, but frankly have been a little short on the MM's needed to really get the shots I want. My most versatile wiidlife lense now is the 100x400.

The 600 is obviously on my list and I have recently wondered about the Sigma 300x800. I have also considered the Big Ma but frankly have felt that 500mm would cut me a little short.

As an alternate route, I have been considering the 300 2.8 or the 400 2.8. They are not that much less money than the 600, but I have seen some incredible photography with a 1.4 and/or 2x on them. These lenses are lighter to carry than a 600mm and physically smaller which has some obvious plusses.

I wonder if those of you with more experience could share your thoughts relative to these lenses and what might be my considerations as I attempt to make a wise purchase.

IMO it depends mostly your shooting style...
Are you confortable with using a tripod all the time (or not)?

A 600mm (or a 400mm f/2.8 ) will require a sturdy tripod so you'll need to think about how to set it up and then how to move about (with the tripod and accompanying head/gymball)

I opt for the 500mm because I shoot mostly handheld and not only that I also travel overseas for most of my shoots (hence a tripod is not an option and also add to the weight that I'll have to carry with the luggage).
-> A 500 f/4 with a 1.4xTC (or a 300 f/2.8 with a 2x) can still be handheld to 700mm (or 600mm)

BTW I also carry a Bigma because sometime I shoot from a 1-person kayak which makes the bigger primes not possible (see their relative sizes/weight in the first link below):
