Default Which Tamron Teleconverter?

Can someone help me figure out which Tamron Teleconverter is going to work best with my current array of lenses?

My choices appear to be:

1.4x AF Teleconverter for Canon EOS ($209.95)
1.4x SP AF Pro Teleconverter for Canon EOS ($129.00)

The lenses I be using these on are the following:

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (Kit lens)
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

I've steered away from the Canon 1.4x TC because i understand it doesnt work with the 70-300. I'm not sure about the kit lens....

I've also steered away from the various 2.0x TCs because I'm under the impression that the image quality is not that good with the 2.0x TCs attached. Am I right? Anyone with some first hand knowledge want to weigh in and give me thier opinion?

My interest in the 1.4x TCs is to extend the FL of my current lenses so i can get close-up wildlife/bird shots. Any other lenses beyond the Canon 100-400mm are out of my budget for the forseeable future.

Thx.

I wouldn't waste my money on a Tamron, and would only consider the Canon and use it with the 100-400 if you are going to have to use one. However I wouldn't really want to use any as you are going to lose AF so unless you are happy with MF it is going to be hard. Actually with liveview it isn't so bad if the subject isn't moving and you are using a tripod. There will be loss of quality but not too much if you go with the Canon TC.

I only use a TC on my Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 and that works OK with a 2x as well if I stop down a little. It can be used with my 70-200 but what is the point as this is covered by the Sigma.

Mark - I think MichaelT1i is trying to do this 'manually' anyway as he even attempted to adapt his FL lenses...

The issue is the mechanics of the Canon TC being thicker than most and would bump against the lens rear elements and has nothing to do with the lens aperture (which one can always tape the pins to make it work)

I thought the canon TC would still work with the 100-400 but might have been wrong.

It works fine on the 100-400 but this is what MichaelT1i wrote:

Yes sure, but as I pointed out there is no gain in using it on such a lens as there is a longer option available so I would want the better optics of the Canon personally.

You might be interested in the Bigma which is still within your budget:

BTW they also have a lower cost 150-500 with IS:
