the OP said he is about to buy 50D. Hence suggested some options to make his trip light and manageable.

No problem. If the OP wants to hear about alternative systems, we can move this thread to the What Camera Should I Buy Forum. But, I've seen no indication of that so far. ;-)

Any system has pros and cons and the OP may have good reasons for wanting a 50D versus other camera models. If not, lyn can let us know how we can best help.

In my experience you're really going to want something that goes out to around 400mm, it depends very much on which reserve you are going to and how close you will be getting to the animals. And also of course there is a great deal of luck involved.

I think the best all-round suggestion for the 50D therefore is the Canon 100-400 L. The IS is useful when working from a Land-Rover. The zoom range is good. The IQ is good. There is no perfect lens, just a grab-bag of compromises.

For wider angles just the kit lens will likely be fine, and not too heavy to cart along. If you are weight-sensitive you could probably manage with the 70-300 IS.
