Thanks mtclimber for the second pic. I was looking for a shot like that. My seat will be similar to the area where you took that pic.

Now I think I narrowed my choices to either the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L or the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L.

Can't seem to decide

AB-

You will not be disappointed by using the Canon 24-105mm L lens. It is a great lens and it will probably become one of your most used lens. Here is a photo that I took in Greece with the Canon 24-105mm L lens and my Canon 20D.

mtclimber how would you compare the lighting in sambradrome? concert lighting? outdoor sports lighting?

Would a combo of high ISO and a 2.8 lens on a 5d mark ii enough to freeze action or will there be slight blurring?

My final choice. I will bring 3 lenses. I will buy one and rent the other two.

I think I will get the Canon EF 24.mm f1/4 II UMS, Canon EF 24-700 f2.8L UMS, and the Canon EF 70-200 f2/8 L IS UMS.

Just wondering if the 70-200 is too much zoom for sitting in the front row of the parade?

i don't think you really need the 24 1.4 to be honest. between the 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8, you are covered well.

if you must add a 3rd lens, the 16-35 or 17-40 would be a better option.

how bout a flash gun? budgeted in a 580 or 430 ex yet?

It is too long - What'll happen is you'll be constantly switching lenses and missing out on all the shots!

-> or worse drop or loses a lens in the middle of the action (stick with 1 zoom i.e. 24-70 or so)

That's true and since the Canon 5d mark II has 21 megapixels I can crop pics easily.
