Default wide angle lens for Canon Eos

I am thinking about getting a wide angle lens, Been looking at the sigma 12-24 F4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM.

Any have any experience with this lens, and do anyone have any other suggestion?

Well that lens gives you the ability to use it on a full-frame if you ever move up in the future, though it vignettes and distorts pretty bad on ff. but works quite well on crop-bodies.

For that price, i would go with the Tokina 11-16 2.8. Gives you fast 2.8 constant aperture and right now is the sharpest and least-distorting ultrawide there is for crop-cameras.

I own the Tokina 12-24 F4, and have always been impressed with it, very sharp, low distortion. Ends up being one of my most used lenses. Its an easy recommendation on a budget, but the 11-16 2.8 is better in every way.

then the sigma is the clear winner, and there is really nothing else that can do that.

I'm a Sigma 12-24 user and it isn't that fantastic unfortunately. I've talked to others who have or have had the lens and seems that I'm not the only one who has found this. The main problem is resolution fall off nearer the edges on FF even when stopped down.

As Hards says it is pretty much the only option out there but I wanted to point out the potential shortfalls. I still use the lens, but would use it more if it was a little better.

Thanks, with these suggestion, I think I will just live with 28mm as my widest for my eos-1. Not worth the effort for that kind of short fall.
