Default 17-55 2.8 is

I am currently trying this lens out and I am quite impressed. I find it performs even better than some L series lenses like the 17-40, 24-70. I think canon did a great job with this lens and my only complaint is I wish they had gone ahead with L series build. At $1000 for the lens you are already up there within L price range and although the build is very good, I would have preferred paying a couple hundred more for L build features. I can only assume they held back so as not to cut into sales of other lenses.

Anyone looking for a fast lens in this range I highly recommend giving this lens a go as there are no real downsides to it.

i feel the build is equivalent to L series. And this is the sharpest lens for a cropped sensor.

for a cropped sensor, i dont see any L lens comparable to the 17-55 IS.

My guess is that it is probably Canon keeping the L series only for FF so won't put it on a EF-S lens, however as you both say it is a great lens, I wouldn't mind having one in my bag but can't justify it for my needs.

Ah man, I knew I forgot something LOL. However I think I have enough kit really so shouldn't complain. I'm planning that we might shoot weddings together, then might be able to justify more toys in the future.

So, who's shooting your wedding? That would be a tough gig, having you look over their shoulder at every shot ...
